                                                                                                                   ANNOUNCEMENTS 4/29/2014

How would you feel if one day you woke up and could not speak anymore or were unable to look another person in the eye?  This is what individuals with Autism go through on a daily basis.

Did you know…

Children can be diagnosed with an Autism Spectrum Disorder as early as 18 months of age, but the median age of diagnosis is between 4 ½ and 5 ½ years.  Children on the Autism Spectrum typically develop normally from birth until around 18 months. Then they begin to lose the skills they had learned like talking, making eye contact with others and using appropriate social interaction skills.  As children with Autism grow up, they do not outgrow the disorder, though they may learn ways to mask it from those around them.

Tomorrow is the last Wednesday of the month, so you have one more chance to wear blue or an Autism shirt to show your support of Autism Awareness Month!!

Reminder to teachers and students; due to cafeteria usage there will be no snack time this week.

Wednesday afternoon will be the last 6th grade homework club meeting for the year.

There will be a PALS group games afterschool activity Thursday, May 1st afterschool. All PALS members please pick up a permission slip and return to Mr. Allen by this Wednesday.

Attention all staff - if you did not attend the mandatory SOL training yesterday you will need to attend today during your planning block.  These trainings will begin at the beginning of each block.

                                                                                                                        ANNOUNCEMENTS 4/22/2014

Do the names Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Tim Burton, Daryl Hannah, Courtney Love, Andy Warhol, Dan Aykroyd or Lewis Carroll sound familiar to you?  All of these people are famous for different reasons, but they have also been diagnosed as having Autism Spectrum Disorder.  So why is it called Autism Spectrum Disorder?

The effects that Autism has on individuals differ from person to person.  Some people diagnosed with Autism are non-verbal, which means they do not speak or speak very little, and require assistance to complete day to day tasks. Others are high functioning, intelligent individuals who participate daily in school, work and independent activities, just like you and me. These people are usually considered to have Asperger's Syndrome.  No matter what their ability level, individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder are all unique and talented in their own way!

Also, teachers and students...remember, tomorrow is Blue day for Autism Awareness!  Wear your jeans and blue or homemade Autism shirts!

The last basketball club of the year will be tomorrow in the main gym.

What does this mean for you?

It means that with a total student population of 1,650, you could expect that at least 18 of your classmates here at Stone Hill have been diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder and over half of those students are likely boys.

 ANNOUNCEMENTS 4/3/2014

How would you feel if you wanted to speak but couldn't?  If your brain was full of brilliant ideas and you just didn't know how to share them with others?

2 million people in the United States and tens of millions of people worldwide experience this every day because they have an Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Autism is a disorder that causes individuals to experience the world differently from the way most others do. It's hard for individuals with autism to talk with other people and express themselves using words. Individuals who have autism usually keep to themselves and many can't communicate without special help.

Did you know that April is Autism Awareness month?  Throughout April, we will be sharing information with you so you can become more aware of what Autism is and how it affects those living with it and those around them.

On Friday April 4 Akhil Rekulapelli will be representing Stone Hill as he competes in the State level of the Geography Bee.

The top 100 students in the state will be participating and 14 of them are from Loudoun County.
