AOS Students attend Janelia Farm Symposium:  Junior and senior students at the Academy of Science were invited to the October 4th Janelia Farm Symposium Frontiers of Neuroscience:  From Mind to Molecules.  This was one of several events during the opening of the Janelia FarmResearch Campus of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute.  Dr. Thomas Cech, President of HHMI and the recipient of the 1989 Nobel Prize in Chemistry welcomed participants to the symposium. 
 
The students attended the morning session, chaired by Dr. Richard Axel, an HHMI investigator and the recipient of the 2004 Nobel Prize in Physiologyor Medicine.  Speakers included HHMI Investigators Dr. William T. Newsome, Dr. Cornelia I. Bargmann, and Dr. Linda B. Buck who received a Nobel Prize in Physiology and Medicine in 2004. 
 
A lunch session with Dr. Roderick MacKinnon, recipient of the 2003 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, completed the day.  In addition to his prepared remarks, Dr. MacKinnon answered questions concerning  his own education and  preparation for a career as a scientist.
