What is Best Buddies?
Best Buddies® is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to enhancing the lives of people with disabilities by providing opportunities for one-to-one friendships. Best Buddies was founded in 1989 by Anthony Kennedy Shriver. Best Buddies is designed to improve the school environment by promoting friendships between individuals with disabilities (Buddies) and individuals without disabilities (Peer Buddies). Socialization is one of the simplest yet most often underestimated solution to the pattern of exclusion. In addition to the benefit of developing new friendships, Best Buddies also gives students unique opportunities for leadership.
