The English department at Harmony Intermediate consists of sections of Honors and Academic at the eighth grade level and sections of Honors, Academic, and Basic / General at the ninth grade level. Expectations in the eighth grade include an emphasis on developing literacy skills, such as reading comprehension and writing techniques.  Eighth grade students are also expected to take two SOL tests in reading and writing in the spring.  The ninth grade course is considered a survey course designed to expose students to a variety of literature genres as well as experiences with all types of writing.  Ninth grade students are also expected to experience all phases of the research process, and are being prepared to take the PSAT and the 11th grade Reading and Writing SOL tests.

 

The textbooks the department is using currently are McDougal Littell's Language of Literature and Language Network, both of which were published in 2000.
