Goals: To support SOL initiatives by

 

  • emphasizing reading within the FACS curriculum.  Students will be encouraged to independently read as they learn life skills.  For example, they will be expected to read directions to equipment in our Paxton Patterson Module Lab.  They will read and correctly follow recipes.  Students will be encouraged to accurately read pattern guide sheets used for garment construction.  They will read food labels and the food guide pyramid.

 

  • using math skills within the FACS curriculum.  Students will be asked to measure using a variety of instruments used in daily life.  For example, students will be required to measure ingredients after doubling a recipe.  They will be required to lay pattern pieces parallel to the selvage in construction projects.  Students will calculate simple interest on a savings account and  balance a checkbook.  They will compare the cost and the nutritive value of a single serving of several products.

 

Testing:

  • Goals will be measured by the outcome of the product or the project.  FACS directly supports SOLS through curriculum competencies.

  

Differentiated instruction:  FACS uses a variety of higher order thinking skills and problem solving techniques within the curriculum.  FACS has the opportunity to use hands on and cooperative learning activities to emphasize and teach reading and math SOL’s in practical ways that can be used in day to day living.

 

Because of differentiated instruction, the FACS curriculum lends itself to a variety of learning styles, which help all students achieve.
