Gymnastics: Congratulations to the gymnastics team for their home meet Tuesday, finishing fourth against six teams. Congratulations to Sara Snare for earning 2nd on Vault with a score of 9.35, 4th on floor and 4th all around. Congratulations to Lauren Sutara finishing 9th on beam with a score of 7.975, and congratulations to Kaycee Delitta earning 9th on vault with a score of 8.65.

Newspaper: The newest edition of the school newspaper is Here! See your homeroom teacher for a copy or stop by Room 609 to pick one up. Please note: The newspaper was supposed to be in full color, but due to a printing error, it is in black and white newprint instead. The latest edition was designed to have vivid color on each page, but due to the holiday break, we had no time to have re-print the paper. We hope that you will still read the newspaper and enjoy it. Just imagine that it’s in full color. Happy holidays from the Outlander staff. We hope to see you at our holiday coffee shop on Friday.

The Freshman girls basketball team defeated Briarwoods last night to raise their record to 5-0. Natalie Blankenship, Kaylee Washington, and Rachel Hubbuch each with 5 points. Outstanding defense by Virginia Carpenter, Hannah Thomas, Katie Cox, and Ashley Meadows.

Congratulations to the Woodgrove Debate team for its excellent performance at the MEGA tournament held at Lake Braddock HS this past Saturday.  Six medals were won:

·         Will Greer and John Burroughs won a medal for coming in 6th place the Junior Varsity division of policy debate.  This was John’s first competition at that level.

·         Minh-Tam Tran Le placed sixth in the Junior Varsity division of Lincoln Douglass debate

·         Abby Lenhart won a medal for taking first place in novice  Lincoln Douglass debate.

·         James Vasile won all of his debate competitions in novice Lincoln Douglass debate.  This was his first competition.

·         Special congratulations go to Minh-Tam because of her exceptional coaching of the Lincoln Douglass debaters.  I can predict some of them will go to the state competition in May.

Also, there will be a debate team meeting today in room L514 for all current and aspiring debaters.  We need to plan for our next 3 tournaments.  Please be prompt.

The lady Wolverines improved their record to 3-1 with a 79-45 win over visiting Martinsburg Friday night. Leaders for the Wolverines were: Brooke Basinger with 18 points, Sarah Root with 18 points and 18 rebounds, Jordan Wick with 12 points, Hallie Daughtry with 8 points, and Camryn Fagan with 4 points and 10 assists. The ladies play at Heritage on Wednesday and return to the Wolverine Palace Friday night at 7pm.

Lost Art Sale: Starting Tuesday morning the Art Department will be having their lost art sale. The sale will be in front of the office before the start of school and will run until Friday.

Woodgrove wrestlers competed in varsity events in two different locations this weekend with outstanding results. Varsity team in action in Pennsylvania: The team finished 7th out of 28 teams in the Penn Manor Invitational in Lancaster, PA. Individual Place winners in the tournament: Dylan Shockey – 3rd, Jake David – 3rd, Joe LaRock – 4th, Will Gehl – 4th, Gunner Hilling – 6th. B Team at Sterling Lions: The B-team wrestled well and went 3-2 against other varsity teams at the tournament. We defeated Smithsburg (MD) 46-30, Park View 60-9, and Garfield 53-18, before losing to Kellum 64-15 and Herndon 54-18. Austin French received the team’s MVP trophy for the tournament by going 5-0.

Congratulations to both the men’s and women’s swim teams for beating Loudoun Valley for their 2nd straight win each. Also, congratulations to the team for 10 state cut times. Listen tomorrow to see who’s going to states.

Volleyball: The following players need to stop by Coach Keilty’s office and sign the volleyball boards this week – Ashley Russell, Morgan Minniti, and Mallory Jungles.

Choir: The JMU Bluestones, an acappella group from James Madison University, will be here today, December 15th from 1:00-2:10 in the choir room. All of Mrs. Morgan’s students are invited to come during their lunch block or 3rd block with permission.

The Academic Team took 2 of 3 matches last night. They were lead by Ammon Frederick-Harteis, Bobby Regan, Logan Czarnecki, Saajid Hasan, Joe Saunders, and Michael White. The team dropped a close contest against county after vanquishing valley but finished the night pummeling the pride of Heritage. The Academic Team’s record now stands at 3 and 1.

Reminder to students: SOL Retakes in History and Science take place this morning following homeroom. Please be prompt. Report to L406.

Congratulations to the Varsity wrestling team for their two victories last night. In the first district duals of the season, the Wolverine grapplers defeated Rock Ridge 64-9 and Loudoun County 51-18. The victories moved the Wolverine dual record to 12-0 on the season. Dylan Shockey, Jake David, Kyle Branch, and Tyler Cole remained undefeated. Special congratulations go to Joe LaRock for achieving his 100th career win last night. He becomes only the 5th Woodgrove wrestler to accomplish the feat. The wrestlers leave today to compete in the 2 day Penn Manor Invitational in Lancaster, PA.

Student candidates for the Foreign Language Academies need to meet with Frau Hall in L206 at the beginning of open lunch today.

All debate team members participating in the tournament being held at Lake Braddock HS on Saturday, Dec. 13th need to be at the bus loop by 6am. Please contact Samantha Purvis via email if you have any questions.

The JV wrestlers continued with their winning ways last night with an overall record of 30-14 at Rock Ridge with 26 wins coming by the way of pin. The following grapplers were 2-0 on the night: Catie Cavallaro, Will Fincher, Seth Whitehurst, Donovan Schmude, Joe Candelaria, Chase Simmons, David Sura, Jared Cordova, Jack Candelaria, Drew Perry, Reed Valley, Connor McNeilly. All wrestlers wrestled hard and continue to improve on the season. Their next competition is tomorrow at Park View HS in the Lions Invitational.

Woodgrove! The Lost Art Sale is returning this Friday and next week, just before winter break! Stop by in the mornings in the lobby to check out beautifully handcrafted pieces done by students and our Art teachers. Now is the time to find that last-minute gift for Grandma … Friday’s sale will be during open lunch only.

Debate Team: There will be a tournament – prep meeting in Room L514 at 4:00pm today. All participants and anyone interested in joining the debate team should attend. Also, those debating at Lake Braddock HS this Saturday need to report to the bus loop at 6:00am.

Theatre: All students attending the State Thespian Conference need to stop by today after school to pick up information schedule and fee schedule for the trip.

If you are interested in the world around you, think about joining the Woodgrove Model UN team as they prepare to tackle these and other global problems at a series of Model UN conferences in January and February. The Model UN team, sponsored by the Woodgrove chapter of the Junior State of America club meets every Wednesday morning at 8am and every Green Club day in Room 212. Congratulations to the Freshman Basketball team on their win over Tuscarora last night 35-12. It was a total team effort! Great job ladies!

 Congratulations to the following orchestra students who made it into the All County Orchestra! Rachel Petterson, Allison Marrs, Angela Yost, Emma Gillies, Casey Sutara, Josef Zimmerman, Grayson Fortin, Brooke Rittner, and Natalie Estep as first alternate. They competed for roughly 60 spots with all 14 county high schools!

 The lady Wolverines Varsity Basketball Team opened their season with a 65-54 victory over Freedom on Friday night. Leaders for the Wolverines were: Brooke Basinger with 19 points and 8 rebounds, Jordan Wick earning a double/double with 11 points and 11 rebounds, Sarah Root with 9 points and 8 rebounds, Kylie Miller with 9 points and Hallie Daughtry with 8 points.  The Wolverines travel to Dominion on Wednesday to take on the Titans.
 
Girls Freshman Basketball  won over Tuscarora HS last night, 35-12.  It was a  total effort!!

Football players selected to the All-Region Team:

1st Team – Dylan Mellor, Jake Wernle, Uzoma Kpaduwa.

2nd Team – Charlie Clewis, Ryan McVey, Clay Dean.

Honorable Mention – Billy Sheehan, Hunter Smith.

 
Congrats to the following orchestra students who made it into the All County Orchestra!..Rachel Petterson, Allison Marrs, Angela Yost, Emma Gilles, Casey Sutara, Josef Zimmerman, Grayson Fortin, Brooke Rittner, and Natalie Estep as first alternate.  They competed for 60 spots with all 14 county high schools.
 
Wrestling Team for their performance in the opening weekend of the season.  The Wolverines went 10-0 in their duals meets and were declared champions of the Eagle Invit.  The combines score of the 10 matches was 602-154, including a 41-36 win against 2nd place East Fairmont in which Joey Sgarrella had a pin in the last match to seal the victory.  
 Huge milestone reached by Dylan Shockey this weekend as he earned his 100th career wins.  He becomes only the 4th wrestler to accomplish this in Woodgrove history.
Top Performers on the weekend were:
Dylan Shockey, Jake David, & Tyler Cole who all went 10-0
Kyle Brach went 9-0
Jarrett Tardiff went 9-1
Yadel Schabel & Joe LaRock went 8-2
The wrestlers are next in action in conference dual meets against Loudoun County and Rock Ridge @ County on Thursday night!

Congratulations to the Woodgrove High School DECA District Leadership Conference Participants.  Woodgrove competed at the District DECA Competition at Stone Bridge on Saturday and had a phenomenal showing.  Students at this competition must take a comprehensive exam testing their overall knowledge of business, finance and marketing concepts.  This test is averaged with their performance on two role play case studies on the date of the event.  Students are provided with only 10 minutes to prepare for an on the spot interview testing their level of competency in a broad spectrum of marketing concepts. 

In the category of Accounting Applications, Bruce Hoffman placed first on his comprehensive exam and first place overall in his category.

Rachel Pike received recognition for finishing in 2nd place on her comprehensive exam in Apparel and Accessories Marketing.  She received 3rd place in her first Role Play and finished in 3rd place overall for her category.

Also in Apparel and Accessories Marketing, Caleb Blank received 2nd place on his 2nd role play and finished in 2nd place overall for his category.

In the event of Business Finance, Peter Mysak received 2nd place in both role plays, earning him an overall 3rd place finish in the event.

In Restaurant and Food Service Management, Alex Palacios received  3rd place recognition for his performance on his first role play.

Also in RFSM, Cody Pasielski received recognition for his 1st place performance in his second role play.  His performance also solidified his position as the2nd place overall winner in the event.

Betsy Beasley received 3rd place for her outstanding performance on the comprehensive exam in Retail Merchandising.

Collin Burns competed in the category of Sports and Entertainment Marketing where he was the 1st place winner for his comprehensive exam, 2nd place on his first role play, 3rd place on his second role play and he finished in first place overall for his category.

In Principles of Hospitality and Tourism, Zachary Turgeon received 4th place overall, while Katie Pasielski was recognized for 3rd place in her role play and 3rd place overall for Principles of Hospitality and Tourism.

Noah McBride competed in the Principles of Marketing category, receiving first place on his comprehensive exam, 2nd place on his role play and dominated the event in first place overall.

All first, second, third, and fourth place finishers will compete at the State Leadership Conference in Virginia Beach in February.  Congratulations Woodgrove DECA!  We are so very proud of all of the hard work of every competitor at the District Leadership Conference.

Congratulations to the Academic Team on their win at the fall Scholastic Challenge Competition. They beat Stonebridge, Broad Run, Heritage, Potomac Falls, Rock Ridge, and Park View. The team was led by Senior Sensation Ammon Frederick Harteis, Ian Faletti, Logan Czarnecki, Bobbie Reagan, Sierra Raney, and Ken Dunn. The team travels to NBC on Saturday for their taping of “It’s Academic”.

Astronomy:  There will be a great meteor shower tonight. Look to the east. 2-3 meteors per minute at 8:00pm coming from the Taurus Constellation. No night class tonight in Astronomy.

Gymnastics tryouts begin today in the auxiliary gym beginning at 3:45pm. Make sure you bring the appropriate gear. You must attend all three tryouts in order to be eligible to be on the team. Those days are today, tomorrow, and Wednesday, the 10th, 11th, and 12th.

The Woodgrove Ice Hockey Team lost last Friday to Patriot/Rock Ridge. It was a hard fought game ending with a score of 15 to 13.  Ryan Ferenz scored 6 goals and 9 points and Adam Price scored 5 goals and 7 points. Bobby Zoldos played outstanding stopping a total of 40 shots. An overall great effort by everyone on the team.

The cross country team ran in the 4A North Regional Championships yesterday. Both the girls and boys teams will be moving on to the state meet on November 15th. The boys were led by senior All Region runner Josh Cromwell who placed 11th with a time of 16:54. The boys team placed 6th out of 16 team. Congratulations to Josh Cromwell, Aedan Pettit, Devin Geier, Collin Shipp, Stephan Bath, Alex Brown, and Aiden Bergel.

The girls team was led by freshman Emma-Jane Kimmett with a time of 20:05. The girls team tied for 6th place meaning it came down to a tie breaker with our #6 runner senior Jenna Goode beating out Handley’s #6 by 7 places. Congratulations to Emma Jane, Mary Anna Adams, Brianna Spears-Heinel, Grace Robinson, Cary Brown, Jenna Goode and Kelly Sullivan.

Athlete 2 Athlete is having a fundraiser today during open lunch and tonight during the football game. Donations can be made with the chance of winning Woodgrove gear. Club members will walk around during lunch and at the game to collect donations.

Congratulations to the 49 students and one alternate who made All-District Chorus! Only 210 students in Loudoun County were accepted and over 20% of those spots belong to Woodgrove. Jineane Hallaj and Georgia Peake scored the top score in the district for their voice part. Samanth Kershner scored 2nd in the district. Matt Evangelisto, Sean Hemphill, and Julia Stewart had the 3rd highest score for their voicepart. This is out of all 14 high schools.

All Varsity Volleyball players need to hand in your uniforms and lock on Friday during open lunch. Please make sure your lockers are cleaned out as well.

The Marching Wolverines completed a fantastic season by being awarded a Superior Rating at the Virginia Band and Orchestra Director Association’s State Marching Band assessment this past Saturday. A rating of superior is the highest rating a marching band can receive from the state.

Congratulations to the Varsity Volleyball team on their win over Heritage last night. Jineane Hallaj led the team with 13 kills, 10 points and 2 aces. Samantha Purnell added 12 kills, 4 points, and 2 aces. Ashley Russell 6 kills and Morgan Minniti 17 service points.

 On Saturday, November 1st at 8:00pm, Theatre students will present their breath-taking VHSL Competition Play. This is an encore presentation of this production and is definitely worth seeing. Early Childhood students participating in the Fall Festival today need to report to L505 after Homeroom.

Orbital Sciences based in Dulles, VA, is scheduled to launch the Antares rocket from NASA’s Wallops Flight Center (north of Virginia Beach) tonight! The rocket will bring the Cygnus spacecraft carrying 5000 pounds of supplies and experiments to dock with the International Space Station. So step outside and look east tonight during the 10 minute launch window starting at 6:22pm and witness Loudoun’s contribution to America’s space program.

There will be a Key Club meeting next Wednesday during the FLEX club block. Any member who has not paid for a Key Club t-shirt may do so until then. Anyone with questions should see Mrs. Stone.

“Hey, I know when we met yesterday morning to do announcements it was a Monday morning and you were still a bit tired but do you remember us talking about FACEtime?”

“I sure do, even though I was still dragging a bit I didn’t forget, you got me thinking about it yesterday after we did the announcements. FACEtime is the student advisory thing, right?”

“Yep.”

“And it starts next Wednesday?”

“Yep, and just about everyone in the building will be involved. There will be a total of 123 FACEtime groups. Each group will be led by a FACEtime advisor and each group will consist of about 13 students. The groups are mixed grade level so I’m looking forward to meeting some new kids. I’m excited!”

Congratulations to the Woodgrove Marching Wolverines. The Marching Wolverines traveled to the Virginia Beach SportsPlex on Saturday, October 27th to participate in the USBands Virginia State Championship. The band performed an almost impeccable show and received a 2nd place trophy for their efforts. The band also won the best percussion caption. The band received very high scores in the areas of Music and Overall Effect. Go Marching Wolverines!!!

The Woodgrove Key Club is hosting it’s 5th annual 5K Walk/Run, a benefit for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. “Run for Your Life”, a Costume-Optional 5k, will take place on Saturday, October 25 at 5pm right here on the Woodgrove cross country course. Participants will choose from two 5k courses-the “zombie course” where participants will “run for their lives” through the woods while escaping zombies or the “traditional course” which follows the normal, zombie-free cross country route.

Registration begins Monday, October  20, during each lunch shift. See a Key Club member or your English teacher for a registration form. You may also register on Active.com or see Mrs. Stone in Room 600 for further details. The cost to participate is $25, and it includes a free t-shirt.

Good morning, Woodgrove. In Homecoming 2014 news this morning…this evening is the 5th anuual PowderPuff football game at the stadium between the Junior Class of 2016 and the Senior Class of 2015. Come out, see some great action, help support the Junior Class Council, and then stay for the free BONFIRE in the athletic gravel lot immediately following the game.

Tomorrow, the fun of Homecoming Week continues. The spirit day for tomorrow is THE WILD. Wear your craziest, tackiest, most mis-matched apparel you have. The Court will be entertaining us tomorrow afternoon at the pep rally. The parade begins at the bus loop at 6pm tomorrow evening, followed by a free BLOCK PARTY for the student body before the big football game against the Raiders from Loudoun County High School. And…the King and Queen of Homecoming will be crowned tomorrow evening at halftime.

Homecoming Dance Ticket Sales Update:  Yes...we will be selling tickets in the main lobby before school tomorrow, Friday, October 17th.

This morning, you will get your student pictures from your homeroom teacher. If you would like a re-take, you must bring this picture package to the retake session, or you must purchase a new package. Students cannot get retakes without a purchase. Retakes will be on October 30th. If you were absent for your original picture date, you can get your photo taken on the 30th. If you have any questions, please see Mrs. Pyle in Room 603.

The last opportunity for seniors to have their photos taken for the yearbook will be on October 27th and 28th. Seniors need to make an appointment with Lifetouch if they want retakes. Students who have not yet been photographed will automatically be scheduled.

Congratulations to our Marching Wolverines. At the US Bands Blue Ridge Showcase this past Saturday our marching band marched again into victory. The marching band won first place in their class receiving Best in Marching and Best in Overall Effect. The band also had the highest score of all the “A” Classes.

Cheer them on as they prepare to go to the JMU Parade of Champions this coming Saturday. Go Marching Womverines!!!

Congratulations to the following students who made it into the Senior All-Virginia Honors Choir: Sam Van Vleet, Scott Clark, Christine Stewart, Darby Clinard, and Jineane Hallaj. Matt Evangelisto was selected as an alternate. Darby Clinard was the highest scoring soprano in the state. Woodgrove had the second-highest number of delegates in the entire state out of all the high schools in Virginia.

a HUGE thank you to everyone who was involved in the success of last friday's Fashion Show.  the $700+ raised will help us fund...

...this saturday's first Movie on the Green event.  we're showing Monsters, Inc. on the practice softball field behind the bus loop, beginning at 6:45pm.  the event is FREE to the entire WHS community.  bring a blanket (or bring two - one to sit on and one to wrap up in!) and come enjoy the fun.  if the evening is rainy or excessively cold, we will still have the showing...inside.

this friday is a home football game, and so many students will be staying after school to begin Stairwell Decorating from 4 to 7pm.  the decorating continues monday (columbus day) from 2 to 6.  be ready to be dazzled next tuesday when you come in!

for students who ask...dance tickets are on sale this friday during open lunch, as well as next tuesday, wednesday, and thursday BEFORE SCHOOL.  that's it.  NO sales next friday (oct 17).

next thursday (oct 16) is the annual PowderPuff football game between the ladies of the senior and junior classes.  the excitement begins at 5:45 in the stadium.  this is followed IMMEDIATELY by the bonfire, to be held behind the visitor bleachers.  for anyone wishing to stay and help assist with either of these events, the Student Council will gladly get you Jersey Mike's for dinner...if you let us know by next Wednesday morning.

KUDDOS TO:  

The WHS Golf Team competed in the Conf. 21 Championship yesterday at Algonkian Regional Golf Course.  The team had a strong showing with Jack Klimek leading the way with a 76 and Joey Eastman shooting a 79.  The team total was 326.  Jack Klimek will continue to represent the Golf team at the 4A North Region Championship, which will be held at Ivy Hills Country Club in Lynchburg, VA on Tuesday October 7th.   

Congratulations to the following orchestra students who recently competed in the prestigious Regional Orchestra Auditions; placing in the highly competitive violin division for senior regionals are:  Jordan Bartel & Amelia Bailey in the Viola Div., freshman, Somerset Peede.  WHS Orchestra also earned 2 placements in the Junior Regional Orchestra-freshman, Brooke Rittner on Bass and Natalie Estep on violin. 

Football- JV FB team improved their record to 4-1 with 42-6 win over HHS last night!

The WHS Golf Team on their most recent match on August 27th.  They defeated both PFHS and PVHS by 13 strokes in a 9 hole tournament.  Low scorers for WHS included, Jack Klimack with a 36, and Michael Briel with a 39.
 
The Varsity VB Team won over Washington HS last night.Leading the Wolverines was Samatha Purnell with 12 points and 10 kills.  Jineane Hallaj added 5 points and 3 aces along with 6 kills.  Outstanding defense by Jessica Hornyak, Angela Yost, Dorothy Dimitreau and Lexi Waldman.  Great Job Team!
The JV VB Team defeated Washington in 2 sets- 25-15 and 25-12.  Outstanding play by Emily Haak, Carolyn Cain, Ashton Marquart and Katelyn Hornyak.
