Congrats to the Gymnastics Team on a great first meet last night.  The team came in first place above Riverside, Loudoun Valley, Park View and Forrest Park.  Great job to sophomore River Stone as well, who placed on every event and first in the all around.  Come out to Park View next Tuesday, Dec.13 for another chance to see them in action.

The Town of Purcellville has announced the Annual Sweats for Vets Program
to benefit veterans in need at the Matinsburg VA hospital.
Guidelines for the program are simple:
New Sweat sets (top and bottom)
Sizes needed are XL, 2XL and 3X
Tie each sweat set (top and bottom) together with a ribbon only (do not gift wrap)
Drop off at Purcellville Town Hall by Friday, December 16.  
  
December 7 
The Lady Wolverines basketball team lost their conference opener last night at James Wood 67-52.  Leaders for the Wolverines were Madi White with 11 points, 7 rebounds and 3 steals; Jordan Wick with 11 points and 9 rebounds; Sophia Coates with 10 points; and lilly Forrester with 7 points and 5 rebounds and 3 steals.  The Wolverines return to action Friday
night vs Loudoun Valley in their annual play for a cure game to benefit Loudoun Breast Health Network.  Girls play at 6 followed by the boys at 7: 30 PM. 
 
There will be a Hockey Club meeting Thursday after Facetime. 
 
The Academic Team went 2 and 1 last night, vanquishing Valley 270 to 90 and rolling Riverside 240 to 135 before falling to County 225 to 135.  Patrick Ramsey led the team along with Jack Delmonte, Rebecca Falletti, Emily Franklin, Trevor Griggs-Demmin, Matt Herrity, Michael McKim, Sean Whalen and Josef Zimmerman who all made strong contributions.  The team returns to scholarly action tomorrow night at Freedom in their third and penultimate regular season match.

We are happy to announce the winners of Woodgrove High School's first Poetry Out Loud Competition!  Although the scores were very close, we would like to congratulate the first place winner Lauren Bogle.  In second place, and serving as first alternate, is Shelby Kostal, and in third place and serving as second alternate, is John Burroughs.  Mrs. Elbaum, Ms. Novi and Mrs. Harar would like to congratulate all of the participants.  They are very proud of your hard work!

The December PTSO meeting has been rescheduled to Tuesday, December 13th in the library at 7 PM.
 
The Wolverine Wrestling Team kicked off its season at the Hedgesville Duals this weekend.  The team wrestled a total of ten dual meets in two days of action, finishing with a record of 9-1.  Without going into specific results the cumulative scores on the weekend were as follows: Woodgrove 579 Opponents 158.  None of our wrestlers finished with a losing record on the weekend.  Some of the outstanding performances included:  Catie Cavallaro, Garrett Tardiff and Derek Shockey all went undefeated at 10-0. Zach Stanley went 9-1.  Connor Sisk and Joe Candelaria went 8-2. Ivan Adams went 8-1. Will Fincher and Drew Oliver went 7-3.  Congratulations on a fantastic start to the season!  The team will be in action again this Thursday and Friday, 12/8 and 12/9 at the Mad Mats Invitational at Magruder High School in Maryland.

The Academic Team opened its season last night with a clean sweep, taking all 3 matches.  The Wolverines knocked off Rock Ridge 210-180, pummeled Park View 230-130 and clobbered John Champe 260-120.  Leading scorers for the team were Trevor Griggs-Demmin, Josef Zimmerman and Patrick Ramsey.  The team returns to scholarly action next Tuesday when they will take on County, Valley and Riverside. 
 
Round Hill Elementary School would like to thank the Woodgrove High School Astronomy Club for the awesome Planetarium Programs given to all our 1st and 4th grade students  yesterday - Dec. 1, 2016.  The presenters  were:  Dennis Potts, Berkley Umbaugh, Parker Beverly, Nichole Stutt and Caroline Potts.

Virginia Junior Classical League Awards 2016
On November 20th and 21st  thirty-two Woodgrove students attended the Virginia Classical League Convention. Congratulations to the following Woodgrove students who earned awards out of 1850 students who competed: 
Nolan Alvarez, Erika Berlik, Bailey Brooks, Lizzie Clark, Rita Frie, Andrew Hale, Calle Junker, Andrew Leitner, Lilly Smeraldo, Nicole Stutt, Caitlin Williams.  
Congratulations to the following Woodgrove students who placed in the top three in one or or more events at the Virginia Classical League Convention:
Megan Beach, Nancy Benedict, Stefania Dodd, Emily Franklin, Ranger Kasdorf, Declan McCormack, Casey Milburn, Somerset Peede, Carley Tantlinger, Molly Warndorf.

The Woodgrove Pep Band will have their first rehearsal today after school.  All student musicians are welcome to participate in the Pep Band.  Rehearsal starts at 4:00 PM in the band room and will conclude at 6:00 PM.  Onward, Woodgrove!

The Woodgrove Marching Wolverines complete their season in great fashion this past Saturday.  Over the season the marching Wolverines won 1st place at the USBands Regional Championship, 1st at the Valley Showcase, 1st place at the Washington High School Northern Panhandle Championship, won 2nd place at the USBand Virginia State Championship, received a Superior Rating at VBODA Virginia Marching Band Assessment and completed the season in 7th place out of a field of 26 other bands in their class at the USBands National Championship.  Way to go Marching Wolverines!
 
The Cycling/Outdoor club will meet at the Outdoor Classroom during Blue Club meeting on Thursday, November 10.

The Lady Wolverines field hockey team's season came to an end last night losing a tough 2-1 overtime game to Faquier in the regional semifinal game.  Addison Halveland scored Woodgrove's goal while  goalie Lauryl King made some incredible saves behind her strong defensive core of Kendall Briscoe, Ellie Cirillo and Caroline Walter.  Many other girls also combined to keep Faquier in check but came up just one goal short.  The Woodgrove community is proud of your inaugural season with an incredible 16-3 record.  Congratulations girls!

Congratulations to the members of the Woodgrove Debate Team who participated in the tournament on Saturday at Broad Run High School.  For many students, this was their first tournament ever.  The team earned some impressive results with 
three partners placing in the top 6 in policy debate.  Shelby and Grace Kostal placed 5th.  Giovanni Cianciaruso and Hannah Norsworthy placed 4th, and Lizzie Clark and Abby Lenhart placed 3rd.  In addition, Shelby Kostal was recognized as 3rd best speaker in policy and Giovanni Cianciaruso was named best speaker in policy.  Congratulations to all who represented Woodgrove so well!

Congratulations to the Varsity Volleyball team on their win over Loudoun Valley last night 25-16, 23-25, 25-23 and 25-23. The team was led by senior Carolyn Cain with 21 kills and 18 digs.  Senior Emily Haak added 12 kills and 9 digs and junior Maddie Erb had 10 kills, 3 blocks and 7 digs.  Senior Maggie Mengel with another steady match - 4 aces, 3 kills, 37 assists and 11 digs.  Shannon Grady had 4 digs, Kailey Ryan 13 digs and Katelyn Hornyak with 8 digs and 3 aces.  Great job ladies!
Thanks to all the students who came out last night.  The team will host Sherando on Monday night in the first round of the conference tournament.  Hope to see you there! 
 
The Lady Wolverines field hockey team came up just one goal short last night and lost a hard fought  championship game to Heritage 2-1.  It was a well played game with Woodgrove's goal coming from Caroline Catterton.  Even with the loss though, the girls will take their 16 wins and advance to the regional tournament next week when they will play at Fauquier HS on Tuesday starting at 6 PM.  Great inaugural season girls and best of luck next week in the tournament!
 
Our Woodgrove Marching Wolverines are continuing with their amazing season.  Yesterday the marching band traveled to the VBODA marching band assessment and received a superior rating for their performance.  A rating of Superior is the highest award given at the assessment.  Way to go Marching Wolverines, keep up the good work!

Congratulations to the boys and girls x country teams for their performances in yesterday's Conference 21 West Championship.  The girls placed 2nd and the boys placed 3rd - both teams qualified for regional competition next week.  All Conference runners include girls: Emma Jane Kimmett, Sophie Hudak, Shelby Kostal, Allison Marrs. And boys:  Rylan Pettit and Will Fincher. Great Job to both teams!
 
In front of a large home crowd, the girl's varsity field hockey team won their first ever playoff game last night defeating Dominion 3-1.  The Lady Wolverines fell behind 1-0 in the second half, but rallied with 3 straight goals to gain the victory. Alex Young led the team with 2 goals while Addison Halveland scored the other.  The team now advances to the conference championship game tonight when they travel to Heritage to take on the Pride starting at 6 PM. Woodgrove goes into the game with a 16-1 record and a 14 game winning streak.  Way to go Lady Wolverines!

The Woodgrove Outlander has arrived! Get your copy of the school newspaper - teachers have copies as do any Outlander staff member or you will find a copy in Room 609.  Congratulations to the Outlander staff members for receiving 1st place scores at the state VHSL competition.  The staff earned superior and outstanding ratings on writing, reporting, editing, layout and design and business management. In front of a large home crowd, the girl's varsity field hockey team ended their regular season schedule last night with a 4-0 victory over Loudoun Valley, finishing with a 15-1 record and a 13 game winning streak.  Jensen Bury led the Lady Wolverines with 2 goals, while Isabel Thompson and Caroline Catterton  each pitched in with 1 goal.  The team also celebrated senior night with Isabel Thompson and Catie Cavallaro each being recognized before the game.  The girls will start their playoff push next week, but the final schedule has not yet been released.  The girls would like to thank the school and their fans for their support in their inaugural season.  Way to make your school proud girls!!

Attention all Monroe, AOS, AET students:  There will be no bus transportation after the PSAT tomorrow.  Monroe students will only be released to drive with a parent note.
 
Another come from behind victory last night extended our Varsity Field Hockey team's winning streak to 12 games, while improving their record to 14-1.  Scoring two second half goals, the final one with just 3 minutes left in the game, lifted our Lady Wolverines to a 2-1 victory over Briar Woods.  Caroline Catterton scored the game winner, while Sofia Thompson started things off scoring Woodgrove's first goal.  Tommorow the girls will be celebrating Senior Night at their last home game of the regular season when they play cross town rival Loudoun Valley starting at 5:30 at the stadium.  Come out Wednesday to cheer on the seniors and the team, watch them play the school's newest sport!
 
Congratulations to the volleyball team on their win over Riverside last night.  Maggie Mengel led the Wolverines with 30 assists, 15 digs and 6 kills.  Carolyn Cain added 14 kills, 9 digs and 3 aces.  Emily Haak had 13 kills, 8 digs and 6 aces. Maddie Erb added 4 kills and 2 blocks, Mable Henry 3 kills, Eve Lippert 2 and Shannon Grady and Brittany Glidden each with 1 kill. Kaleigh Ryan added 9 digs and Katelyn Hornyak  2 aces.  Outstanding defensive effort by Meghan Cleary, Maggie Mengel, Carolyn Cain, Kaleigh Ryan and Shannon Grady.
The team travels to Loudoun  County HS tonight.  Freshman and JV @ 5;45 and Varsity @ 7 PM.  Good luck to all 3 teams!

Our Marching Band is carrying on with the winning traditions here at Woodgrove by winning their 3rd marching band competition in a row.  The Marching Wolverines traveled to Charles Town,West Virginia this past Saturday and competed in the Washington High School Marching Band Classic.  The band received 1st place trophies in Music and Visual Effect and won first place in their class.  The band also received the highest score of all the classes of marching band.  The Marching Wolverines will be traveling to Virginia Beach this next Saturday to compete in the USBands State Championship.

They traveled to Longwood University on Saturday to compete against the top seniors in the state.  Georgia received the highest score in the state for Alto 1.  This is the highest honor a choir member can achieve!

October 11
A large home crowd decked out in pink came out for the breast cancer awareness game last night between our Varsity Field Hockey team and Stone Bridge.  The crowd witnessed one of the most thrilling games as our Lady Wolverines defeated Stone Bridge 2-1, scoring with 30 seconds left in overtime.  Caroline Catterton scored the first goal, and Alex Young netted the overtime winner on breakaway.  The girls have a 13-1 record! Next game will be Monday at Broad Run when they take on Briar Woods starting at 6:45 PM.  The girls want to thank everyone who attended! The team will be donating half of the gate fees collected to the Cherry Blossom Breast Cancer Foundation. Congratulations girls!

Congratulations to Georgia Peake, Julia Stewart, Samantha Kershner and alternate Dillon Corral for making All-Virginia Honors Choir. They traveled to Longwood University on Saturday to compete against the top seniors in the state.  Georgia received the highest score in the state for Alto 1.  This is the highest honor a choir member can achieve!

Congratulations to the Freshman JV and Varsity Volleyball teams on their victories over Freedom last night.  All 3 teams had some amazing plays which led to the wins. Great job girls!! 
 
The Lady Wolverines Varsity Field Hockey team improved their record to 12-1 last night with a tough 3-2 victory over Broad Run HS. Goal scorers for Woodgrove included Ariel Bruecken, Isabel Thompson and Jensen Bury.  Girls have only 3 more games before the playoffs with their next game at home on Monday against Stone Bridge starting at 6:30.  This is a special game as the girls will be decked out in pink to raise awareness for breast cancer. Half of the gate fees collected at the game will be donated to a local breast cancer charity.  Come out and wear pink to show your support!

Congratulations to all 3 Volleyball teams on their wins over Park View last night.  All 3 teams had outstanding team wins! 
 
The girls Varsity Field Hockey team extended their winning streak to 9 games last night with a very hard fought 2-1 victory  over rival Potomac Falls.  Both teams came in with only one loss and it was a defensive battle from the opening minute. Woodgrove's goals were scored by Caroline Catterton and Alex Young.  With the win, the team stands in first place all alone in the County!  The girls are back in action with another away game on Thursday as they take on Broad Run at Freedom HS starting at 6:45.  Congratulations Lady Wolverines!

Congratulations to the Varsity Volleyball team on their thrilling 5 set win last night over Heritage.  Game scores were: 25-18, 25-19, 22-25, 17-25 and 17-15.  Maggie Mengel led the team with 19 digs and 42 assists.  Emily Haak 20 kills and 18 digs, Carolyn Cain 18 kills and 14 digs, Kailey Ryan with 27 digs and Maddie Erb with 11 kills and 4 blocks.  Outstanding  defensive effort by all.

Auditions for this years musical Beauty and the Beast will be held on Oct. 3rd and 4th from 4-6 pm in the Black Box. Audition packets will be available on Monday, September 26th after school in the Black Box.
 
Athlete 2 Athlete is a Blue Club.  The club hosts athletic events for individuals with disabilities. We meet next on Oct. 6th.  In order to get your Blue Club pass, you must pay your $5 club dues to Ms. Barrett in room 508.

Congratulations to Girls Varsity Field Hockey for winning 3-1 over Tuscarora last night!  Jenson Bury scored 2 goals and Addison Haveland scored 1.  Their record right now stands at 6-1.  Come out to their next game on Monday, September 19 right here at home against Dominion at 6:30 pm and cheer them on! Keep up the great work ladies!!
