our TSA chapter competed in Regionals and once again we did a superb job in our
STEM related events. Please congratulate the following:

In Manufacturing Prototype Level II placing 5th
in the Northern Region was: The team of James Cromwell, Daniel Clements, Ben
Taylor, Joseph Warndorf, and Collin Shipp.

In Promotional Graphics placing 5th in the
Northern Region was James Cromwell.

In Transportation Modeling Level II placing 3rd
was Collin Shipp.

These members will be working towards securing a top three
placement at States in May. Good job TSA!

Congratulations to our very own Mr. Shipp … awarded the High School Principal of the Year Award for the Commonwealth of Virginia this past weekend. As we already know, Mr. Shipp is the best … but now the rest of Virginia also knows that he is the BEST out of all the 623 middle and high schools. Congratulations, Mr. Shipp. Please remember to work, honor, and strive as you continue to help make Woodgrove the best place on earth!

Our Winter Guard continues to impress. The Woodgrove Winter Guard travelled to Broad Run High School this past Saturday to compete in the AIA Regional Championship. Our guard received 2nd place out of a field of 10 other guard units. Congratulations Woodgrove Winter Guard.

Congratulations to the women’s choir, men’s choir, treble ensemble, and chamber choirs who all received Superior ratings this weekend at district assessment, which is the highest possible score!!!

German foreign language week activity: Every world language has its unique story and culture. The German club invites you on Thursday, March 19, to come watch The White Rose, a captivating, true story of resistance during WWII. The story twists tension as a brother and sister try to raise a nation-wide revolution against the powerful Nazi machine. The two had to gain the respect of others and keep the secret of their plans from the hands of the government as they attempted to spread the devastating truth behind Hitler’s propaganda. Did they succeed in bringing down Hitler? Did they gain their own page in history? Come to L206 on Thursday, March 19th to find out. The movie begins at 7. Refreshments provided. All students welcome.

Today’s Sweeney Todd rehearsal from 4-7 is an all call. This is a change from the original schedule. Please make note of this. Wednesday – Friday are also all call rehearsals from 4-7.

Women's Acappella will be meeting in the practice rooms during home room flex today.  Please see Mrs. Morgan for a pass.  Women's acappella will also meet tomorrow morning (Tuesday) at 8:15 AM for rehearsal.

This weekend Woodgrove’s Model UN Team traveled to Mclean to compete in the Virginia Invitational Model UN Conference organized by Langley High School. Our delegates Nick Saris, Ammon Frederick Harteis, and Logan Czarnecki spent hours as diplomats working hard in negotiations and resolutions. But at the end, Logan came out with the honorable delegation award representing Ghana in the Disarmament and International Security Committee. The next conference for the MUN Team will be at Valley in two weeks. 

Good morning and welcome to National Foreign Language Week. All week we will celebrate world languages. The Latin Club kicked off the week with Saturday’s Toga Run 5k. Conditions were muddy, but we had an excellent race. Congratulations to Bri Spears-Heinel, the women’s and overall winner, and to Matt Renner, the men’s champion. Look for other World Language events this week.
 
Congratulations to the Woodgrove Advanced Orchestra for earning a superior rating from all 4 judges at district assessment this weekend. Congratulations on a phenomenal performance.

Congratulations to Zack Biggers. Zack auditioned and was selected to the district 16 VBODA Honor Jazz Band.

Congratulations to the Investigators who took home the trophy in this year’s Dodgeball tournament. The Investigators are made up of Davie Wick, Kaleb Bowman, Jameson Copeland, Jack Loving, Matt Gilson, Collin Burns, Matt Whalen, Dylan Mellor, and coaches Davis Reagan and Joe Stephens. The Student Council would like to thank the students and staff for a great success as well. With your help, we raised $1300 for Habitat for Humanity. That is a huge success. We look forward to next year’s tournament.

Good morning, Wolverines. Two HUGE Student Council activities this week …..

The Spirit Links sale to help us make fleece blankets for needy children as part of Project Linus runs through this Friday. Links are on sale for 25 cents each, or 5 for $1, every morning before school in the main lobby, as well as this Wednesday and Friday during Open Lunch at the mobile cart station.

Secondly, the annual Dodgeball Tournament takes place this Thursday during Flex. Team captains are meeting tomorrow morning to pick spots in the 19-team bracket. Admission to the tournament is $1, to benefit Habitat for Humanity. Admission wristbands will be on sale in homeroom this Thursday.

Thirdly, this week we are recognizing National School Breakfast and Lunch Week. Get the grade with school breakfasts and lunches. Thank you to our school cafeteria staff for their day to day efforts. We appreciate all you do.

Today’s Sweeney Todd rehearsal will cover scenes 39-50. Please check books to see if you’re needed today. Rehearsal will be from 4-7, and we will complete blocking.

Congratulations to the Forensics Team for a great performance on Saturday. Chris Consaul and Frankie Stephan earned the call-up spot in Humorous Duo. Charlotte Kulak earned the call-up spot in Humorous Interpretation and Dillon Douglasson and Wyatt Ellerbeck garnered the Silver Medal in Humorous Duo. Dillon and Wyatt will compete at the State Tournament March 28th.

The Toga Run 5k is Saturday, March 14th at 10:00 am on the Woodgrove cross country course. If you couldn’t register last week because of the snow, you can still guarantee yourself a t-shirt if you let Mr. Dyke know by 2:00 today in Room L202.

Attention all juniors: If we do not have school tomorrow you should plan on taking the second part of your SOL Writing test on Monday and Tuesday of next week during your English class.

This Friday, March 6th is the next Open Mic Night. Open Mic starts at 6:30 in the Black Box. Come for a night of music, poetry, and comedy. This is a perfect place to go and express yourself. Hope to see you there!
It’s not too late to turn in your Dodgeball registration items. Forms and money are being accepted today in Room L516. Please make sure you see Mr. Schutte before leaving school today if you and your team still need to register for this year’s tournament.

The annual Spirit Links Competition is now underway. Spirit Links are being sold before school and during open lunches in the main lobby. Links are 25 cents each, or 5 for $1. All proceeds go toward making fleece blankets for needy children as part of Project Linus. Our school goal is 50 blankets…which is just $1 per person in the building. Please help the Student Council make blankets for needy children.

Girls Lacrosse is looking for managers. Earn a varsity letter. Looks great on your college resume. If interested, please stop by after school in the girls locker room hallway and talk to Coach French.

Attention all 11th grade students: Please note the SOL Writing test will begin on Tuesday, not Monday as previously planned. The SOL Writing test, multiple choice component, will be on Tuesday and Wednesday followed by the essay on Thursday and Friday.

Debate Team: It is critical that the following meet in Room 606 after school today to resolve issues about the Metro tournament this Friday and Saturday: Davis Leitner, Josh Kim, Minh-Tam Tran Le and Abby Lenhart.

Please take the time to congratulate members of the debate team for winning the Conference 21 championship on Fri., Feb. 27th: Davis Leitner and Josh Kim won first place in policy debate. Will Greer and Jessy Klinkam won 2nd place in policy debate. Minh-Tam Tran Le won first place in Lincoln Douglas debate. Abby Lenhart won 2nd place in Lincoln Douglas debate. Ana Biondo and Ella Gwartney took 2nd place in public forum debate. This is an amazing accomplishment for a team in its 2nd year of competing. Go Wolverines!

Congratulations to Woodgrove Winter Guard. The Woodgrove Winter Guard competed in their second Atlantic Indoor Association competition on Saturday, February 28th at South County High School. The Winter Guard had quite a day. They took 1st place in their division and improved by 15 points. They had the highest score in the regional scholastic and independent regional categories. The guard received the second highest score of the day regardless of class. Their noteworthy performance earned them a promotion to the next higher level of competition and the team was individually recognized by each member receiving a medal. These achievements are unprecedented by a first year winter guard unit. Again, congratulations Woodgrove Winter Guard!

Congratulations to the Woodgrove Winter Drum Line. The Drum Line competed at the Atlantic Indoor competition on Saturday, February 28th. After moving up into a higher class of competition the drum line made a fine showing by placing 9th out of 12 other drum lines.

Today’s Sweeney Todd rehearsal is an all call music rehearsal from 4-6 in the chorus room.

·         Noah McBride competed in the individual series of Principles of Marketing.

 

·         Kelly Sullivan and Sam Hoskinson represented Woodgrove in the event of Marketing Communications Team Decision Making.

 

·         Katie Pasielski competed in the individual series of Principles of Hospitality and Tourism.

 

·         Rachel Pike, Betsy Beasley, and Eliza Stribling represented Woodgrove in the Fashion Merchandising Promotion Plan event.

All members of the Jazz Band who are going to audition for the District Jazz Band must have their forms turned in by the end of the day.

Chris Consaul and Frankie Stephan won the Silver Medal in Humorous Duo, Dillon Douglasson and Wyatt Ellerbeck won the Bronze Medal in Humorous Duo and Charlotte Kulak took the Gold in Humorous Interpretation.  Thank you to all the team for your hard work.  Well done.

***Woodgrove's swim team on their awesome performance at State's! In particular freshman Keely Hemminger!  Keely is the reigning State Champion in the 200 free and the 500 free.  She is also the new state record holder in the 500 free.  Way to go Keely!! We will be announcing all week on some impressive swims and swimmers.
 
***The Winter Color Guard who traveled to Mt. Vernon High School on Sat. Feb. 14th to compete in the Atlantic Indoor Association's Color Guard Region A2 Competition. The Winter Guard took first place out of a field of 26 other guard units. This was an amazing accomplishment for our Winter Guard's first time in a competition. Again, congratulations to all the members of the guard and to Mrs. Parada their insructor.
 
***The Woodgrove Wrestling team who battled through a weather shortened state tournament to accomplish their highest team finish to date by far! The Wolverine's finished 4th at the 4A State Tournament.

The Woodgrove Boys Basketball Team claimed Dulles District Co-Champion honors last night when they beat the Rock Ridge Phoenix 60-44. This is the first ever District Champion accolade for the Boys Basketball team in the 5 year history of Woodgrove High School. The win was a true team effort with Matt Gilson leading all scorers with 20 points, 5 assists and 2 steals, Davie Wick adding 16 points and 7 rebounds, Prakash Ellis with 6 points, 3 steals and 5 blocks, and Jameson Copeland adding 7 assists and 7 points. Kevin Hernandez, Carl Huber and Brendan Whitfield excelled on defense to put the team in position for the win. The Conference 21 tournament begins Friday with Woodgrove hosting James Wood. Congratulations to Coach Stephen Douglas for his first district title with the Wolverines!

Happy 100th Day of School today! The fun of SnowComing Week wraps up tomorrow with Mathlete v. Athlete spirit day. Be sure to dress accordingly, and have your HR teacher count the number of students participating. The 100th Day doors are being judged this morning, and the winning door will be announced tomorrow at the monthly Student Council meeting in the auditorium during lunch. The ENTIRE school is invited to attend the meeting and have a shot at many different 100-item prizes…including 100 chocolate chip muffins, 100 bags of Skittles, and a $100 MasterCard debit card. You can’t win if you’re not there. That’s tomorrow during open lunch.

The Lady Wolverines finished their regular season last night with a 62-29 victory over Rock Ridge. Leaders for the Wolverines were: Jordan Wick with a career high 16 points and 12 rebounds, Camryn Fagan with 12 points, Kyler Miller with 14 points and 6 rebounds, Jess Hornyak with 8 points. The Wolverines will travel to James Wood Friday night to play the Colonels in the first round of the Conference 21 tournament.

Congratulations to the JV girls basketball team for having an undefeated season at 19 & 0. The girls finished their season last night beating Rock Ridge 52-6. Each contributing to the win and an overall perfect season. The wolverines travel to Loudoun County tonight to face the Raiders.

Softball: Pre-season Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday this week for softball.

Physics: Physics Club Meeting this Wednesday during open lunch in Room 508. We are arranging transportation to University of Maryland’s “Physics is Phun” presentation being held this Friday evening.

The Woodgrove Wrestling team was in action this weekend on two fronts: The JV team finished up their season at the large JV Super Regional at Skyline High School and the Varsity team wrestled in the conference dual seeder tournament at Millbrook High School. The JV team turned in an outstanding performance finishing in 2nd place out of 19 teams. Their 305 points were only behind champion Warren County’s 327 points and far outdistanced Sherando’s 229 points. Individual Performances: Champions – Catie Cavallaro, Joe Candelaria, and Drew Perry. All of these wrestlers dominated their weight classes with Catie winning 2 of her 4 matches by pin and no decision closer than 8-3. Both Joe and Drew pinned their way through their brackets. Other placers: 2nd Place – Marcus Smith and Reed Vallee. 3rd Place – Jose Sura, Casey Taylor, Jack Candelaria, and Connor McNeily. 4th Place – Thomas White. 5th Place – Will Fincher, Brandon Bye, Donovan Schmude, and Kyle Dant. 6th Place – Andrew Fincher. Congratulations for an outstanding effort. The Varsity team finished 6-1. They suffered their first loss of the season to Sherando 33-34. The wolverines won wide decisions over James Wood, Millbrook, Loudoun County, Dominion, Heritage, and Park View. Special congratulations to Dylan Shockey, Peter Mysak, Joe LaRock, Austin French, and Will Gehl who all went 7-0. Wolverines are in action this weekend here at Woodgrove for the conference championships this Saturday. Hoping for a big turnout.

Book Madness 2015 starts this week. What was the best book of the year? Read a pair of books and pick the winner. In the northwest region top seed Red Rising faces the True Tale of the Monster while The Story of Owen, Dragon Slayer of Trondheim battles Half a King. **Congrats to the WHS Wrestling Team on winning the Judges Invitational this weekend at Handley High School in Winchester.  The Wolverines finished 1st out of 17 team with 416 points to outdistance 2nd place Handley with 380 points.
Leading the way were champions Joe LaRock and Jake David, 2nd place finishers were Dylan Shockey and Kyle Branch.  Jarrett Tardiff finished 4th, Garrett Cook, Austin French, and Will Gehl all placed 5th, and Reed Valley placed 6th.
Saturday, January 24th will be played here at WHS for our "Get Your Bell Rung" Tournament.   Next Wednesday here for a quad, which is also senior night!  The Wolverines are currently 14-0 in dual meets and have won 3 tournaments.  Come out and catch some of the action of WHS most successful wrestling team to date!

Congratulations to the gymnastics team for last Saturday’s invitational meet at Parkview High School. The girls were crowned champions of the blue team division. Outstanding performance was turned in by all members – Alisha Barnes made a 3.475 improvement in her all around. Individuals awarded medals were Kaycee Delitta with 6th on floor, bars, and vault, and 5th on beam. Lauren Sutara medaled 2nd on vault, 5th on beam, and 6th all around. Sarah Snare was medaled all around champion and also medaled event champion in vault and floor. She placed 2nd on beam, and 3rd on bars. Good luck to the girls this evening for their meet tonight at Parkview.

Ryan’s friends have organized several bands to come together and donate their time for free, in order to raise awareness and funds for both the Autism and Asperger’s Association, and Hope For The Day, a non-profit movement utilizing music and the arts as a defense mechanism against suicide. Tickets are $10.

Congratulations to the Freshman Girls basketball team on their 27-20 win over Clarke County last night. It was a great team effort!!! The team is now 6-2 on the season.

The Academic Team won both of its matches last night convincingly. Saajid Hasan, Logan Czarnecki, Ammon Frederick Harteis, and Bobby Regan lead the way for the Wolverines, opening up big leads against both Park View and Dominion. Joined by Nazaneen Anwari, Taylor Chatfield, Michael Dragon, Ken Dunne, Josh Kim, Patrick Ramsey, Sierra Raney, Ryan Taylor, and Josef Zimmerman, it was a total team effort as all contributed to the 240-130 pummeling of Park View and the 260-110 dismantling of Dominion.

The Freshman Girls Basketball team lost to Clarke County yesterday in a very hard fought game 32-30. Virginia Carpenter led the Wolverines with 7 pts, Natalie Blankenship had 6 and Maya Lopez added 5. Outstanding defense by Katie Cox and Natalie Blankenship. The team plays today at home against Clarke County. Game time is 5:30 pm.

Congratulations to the Wolverine Wrestling Squad for a very solid performance this weekend in Hagerstown, MD. The wolverines finished in 4th place out of 21 teams, including finishing ahead of some ranked teams in Maryland. Leading the way for Woodgrove was Joe LaRock with an outstanding performance and earning a 11-2 major decision in the finals over a ranked opponent from the host school, North Hagerstown. Also placing in very strong tournament were Jake David and Kyle Branch with 3rd place finishes, Jarrett Tardiff and Dylan Shockey with 7th place finishes, Joey Sgarrella, Peter Mysak, Will Gehl, and Grant Collins with 8th place finishes. The team which is now 12-0 in duals meets and has two tournament championships under its belt is in action tonight at 6:00 in Purcellville with dual meets against Dominion and Loudoun Valley! We would love a huge contingent of Wolverines to invade Viking land to cheer on the wrestlers! Be there! Be LOUD!

All Freshman Girls Basketball players are to be released at 3:15 today for their game.

Women’s Acapella will meet tomorrow, Wednesday morning, at 8 am in the choir room for rehearsal.

The Lady Wolverines Basketball Team lost a hard fought game Friday night vs. Loudoun County 57-53. The wolverines were led by Brooke Basinger who scored 26 points and 6 rebounds. Brooke also became the first lady wolverine to surpass 1,000 points in a career Friday night.  This is an outstanding accomplishment. Please congratulate Brooke if you see her today. The wolverines play at home tomorrow night vs. Champe and Thursday night at 6:00 vs. Loudoun Valley for the Play for A Cure game. Wear pink or black to support breast cancer awareness.

Congratulations to the Wolverine wrestling squad on outstanding performance in tournaments over the break. The Varsity team captured the inaugural Loudoun County Championships Dec. 19th and 20th. Winning county championships were Dylan Shockey, Joe Larock and Jake David. Runner ups were Jarrett Tardiff and Kyle Branch. Turning in an outstanding performance and finishing third was Austin French. The Varsity Team returned to action this weekend finishing in 2nd place, 1 point behind George Marshall High School in the Warren County Invitational. Champions were Dylan Shockey and Joe LaRock. Runner-ups were Jarrett Tardiff and Jake David. The Varsity B team captured the Jefferson County Invitational against 5 other varsity teams this weekend. The team went 4-1 in duals to win the championship. Leading the way were Will Fincher, Austin French and Daniel Candelaria won all went 5-0 on the day. Joe Candelaria, Nick Blackwell and Reed Valley went 4-1.
