Correspondence Schools and Distance Learning Programs
Effective July 1, 2008 the Superintendent of Public Instruction is no longer required to approve correspondence courses in Virginia pursuant to §22.1-254.1 of the Virginia Code, as amended during the 2008 General Assembly Session, House Bill 767. Therefore, the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) will no longer require correpsondence programs to submit materials for approval unless it is a driver education correpsondence course. This change will provide greater flexibility for parents and allow them to use the correspondence school or distance learning program of their choice.
This also means that there is no master list of correspondence schools and distance learning programs for parents to review. Instead, parents must use their own resources to search for and select a program that meets their child's unique needs.
