Meet Mrs. Mackey
I am honored to be the Principal of Rosa Lee Carter Elementary School. This year marks my 38th year as an educator and 6th year as the Principal of this wonderful school. It is a pleasure to be a part of this amazing staff and community. Our teachers are not only highly qualified, but highly energetic, highly caring, and highly motivated to help each of our students achieve their full potential. The Schoology learning platform serves to increase parent-student-teacher communication and access to all that our teaching teams offer.
I received my Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education from Lock Haven University of Pennsylvania and my Master’s Degree in Education Leadership from George Mason University. Prior to joining the Rosa Lee Carter staff, I was the Dean, then Assistant Principal of Liberty Elementary School in LCPS. I began my teaching career in Capitol Heights, Maryland working for Prince George’s County Public Schools where I taught all grades first through sixth. After moving to Virginia, I taught second grade at Ashburn Elementary. While there, I also served as co-president of the PTO and remain a huge supporter of the dedicated volunteers leading the Rosa Lee Carter PTO. I am originally from the little town of Rome, Pennsylvania, but have resided in Loudoun County since 1995. My husband Steve and I live in Ashburn Village. We have a combined family: a daughter, Shahana, and her husband, Jacob, and sons, Ramaan, James, and Billy. This summer we welcomed our first grandchild, a beautiful girl named Marlowe.
I consider myself to be a lifelong learner and enjoy sharing my love of learning with Rosa Lee Carter students and staff. One of my favorite times of the week is Friday morning when I have the opportunity to share "Fascinating Facts" with students on the Morning News Show (MoShow).
I am proud of the hard-working students and teachers at RLC. Our goal this year is to "Engage, Empower, and Enrich" each student every day. We place a strong emphasis on the building blocks for deeper learning and the 5C’s of education: communication, collaboration, creativity, critical thinking and contribution. Two initiatives that promote this type of deep thinking are Personalized Learning (PL) and Project Based Learning (PBL). Through personalized learning paths, students are urged to claim more ownership over their learning and thinking. PL dynamically tailors learning experiences to students’ strengths, needs and/or interests. Project Based Learning is a teaching method in which students gain knowledge and skills by working for an extended period of time to investigate and respond to an authentic, engaging and complex question, problem, or challenge. Rosa Lee Carter students eagerly anticipate the PBL and PL experiences that teachers weave into the curriculum throughout the school year. Students are pushed to take academic risks and not be afraid of failing, as we often learn the most from our mistakes. I encourage you to visit your child's classroom and see for yourself the deep learning that takes place there.
