coffees   Parent Coffees
Periodically throughout the school year, the SHM Guidance Department hosts Parent Coffees, which are parent information sessions, on a variety of topics.  They are informal gatherings, usually with a guest speaker who presents on a particular topic.  There is then time for questions and discussion with the speaker and attendees.  Light refreshments are served during each Parent Coffee


College and Career Night: Our last parent coffee for the year is being held on Tuesday, May 24th, from 7pm - 8:30pm. This parent coffee will cover college and careers. Participants will rotate through 3, 25 minute sessions:

  • Andrea Ashton, representative from The College Funding Coach, will be here to talk about saving/paying for college

  • Kevin Terry, Director of School Counseling at Rock Ridge HS, will be here to discuss high school preparation for students planning to attend college and the work force


  • In addition to a short presentation on the Monroe Technology Center, a representative from Richard Bland College of William & Mary will be here to discuss dual enrollment classes that are offered at Rock Ridge




Our April Parent Coffee will take place on Thursday, April 28th, at 9 am, in the auditorium. Our presenter, Deputy Spurlock, will be presenting on Internet Safety again, with a focus on the consequences of inappropriate use of texting messages.  
March Parent Coffee Presentation: Building Resilience 
Stone Hill's Counseling Department will be hosting our March Parent Coffee Program on Monday March 28th at 7pm in the SHM Auditorium. Dr.Tammy Davis, a graduate profressor from Marymount Univeristy will be presenting a wonderful parent seminar called, "Emotional Survival Skills Every Child Needs." Parents will learn effective strategies to help with the emotional needs of your children. Dr. Davis wiill discuss how parents are a key source in helping children and teens positively overcome personal challenges and adversity. Dr. Davis will also emphasize the idea of resiliency which enables individuals to grow from challenging experiences. 
Teenage Brain - Parent Coffee
On February 26th, at 9:00am, in the auditorium, we will welcome special guest Neil McNerney, Director of the Wellness Connection in Ashburn, VA. Neil will be presenting on "The Teenage Brain - Temporary Insanity." Neil will touch on topics including finding the right balance between telling your teen what to do and letting mistakes happen, hormones vs. brain neurology, and impulsiveness. In lieu of a parent coffee this month, we are asking rising 7th and rising 8th grade parents to review the course selection information that can be found here:
Rising 9th grade parents are asked to attend the Rising 9th Grade Parent Information Night at Rock Ridge High School on January 14th at 7pm.

Topic: ParentVUE
Presenters: Jane Bishop and Jill Berrier, Technical Trainers, LCPS Office of Information Management
Our presenters will review the features and functionality of ParentVUE. They will show you general navigation, menu features such as the calendar, gradebook, attendance, and class schedule. They will also present student information reviews, update requests and the mobile app. Parents are highly encouraged to active their account and will have the opportunity to do so at the parent coffee.

Topic: Internet/Technology Safety

Presenter: Deputy Spurlock, Loudoun County Sheriff's Department

This program is designed for PARENTS ONLY due to the graphic nature of the program and is being advertised county-wide (Space may be very limited and the seats will be available on a first come, first serve basis. We highly recommend carpooling as parking may be an issue). Topics that will be discussed include social networking, sexting/texting, cell phone technology, laptops vs. desktop PC’s, current trends, predatory behaviors, PC and console gaming, and monitoring techniques.

Topic: Drug Awareness and Prevention

Presenter: Loudoun County Sheriff's Department, DEA, LCPS Student Assistance Representatives

The Loudoun County Sheriff’s Department, DEA, Loudoun County Student Assistance Program, and the SHMS School Counseling Department will be hosting a parent presentation on Drug Awareness. This is intended to be a parent-only presentation due to the mature nature of the topic. This program is being advertised county-wide, so space may be very limited (Seats will be available on a first come, first serve basis. We highly recommend carpooling as parking may be an issue).
