  • General Body Meeting - April 2013

    There are lots to cover in the General Body Parent Delegate meeting for April.  We will be accepting nominations for the vacant Vice chair position, as well as, reaffirming the commitment of the existing Officers. We will also hold introductions/speeches of those interested in serving.
     
    In addition, we are planning a Cluster activity involving the school improvement plans (SIP) in preparation for the new roll outs for the 2013-2014 year.  There will be even more ways for parents to remain committed and involved in efforts to strength schools accountability for closing the chasm in academic achievements for students.

    Change of Venue

    Let's Support the Career GPS Expo

    Loudoun County Public Schools have invited MSAAC to participate in the "Getting Prepared for Success" event. This event, previously named "Diversity in Education College and Career Fair", is meant to get Loudoun High School students thinking about their career options after school. Many colleges and careers will be represented.

    Our diverse presence and career stories will be valuable for the students we support.

    Therefore, instead of attending our meeting at the Administration Building please join us at: 
    Dominion High School
    21326 Augusta Drive, Sterling, VA

    The fair begins at 6:30 and ends at 8:30 PM. Dinner will be served for representatives starting at 5:00 PM. 

    We do realize that this is a different schedule than our typical 7 PM meeting time however supporting the fair is important. We will meet again April 17th where we'll review minutes, discuss nominations, and a few other items. 

    If you have any questions please let us know as we realize this is a shift in protocol.

  • General Body Meeting - February 2013

    The focus of the February General Body meeting provided a debrief from the Academic Achievement Advisory Fair held early the month at Tuscarora High School.  The debrief consisted of: Total number of Registered members/guests; Total number of School Board Member attendance; Total number of Resources/Program Participants; Total number of Volunteers; and Total number of Community Partners (Jersey Mike's Subs and Manhattan Pizza- Ashburn).  The meeting also discussed the survey/feedback results from participants; as well as, discuss next steps/improvements going forward. 
     
    We adjourned the meeting with open discussions and some mid year observations towards meeting the objectives/goals of the 2012-2013 year.

  • General Body Meeting - January 2013

    The focus of the January meeting was to enlighten and educate parents of the opportunity that all middle school students will benefit in by participating in the College in Six program.  This county-wide program is implemented at all LCPS Middle Schools and is based on research from the American Youth Policy Forum, the National Office for School Counselor Advocacy, and the Everyone Graduates Center at Johns Hopkins University.  The program emphasizes the importance of preparing students for postsecondary education, careers, and long-term success beginning as early as sixth grade.  Every sixth grade student will visit a college campus and engage in meaningful activities and ask questions of faculty members and students. 
     
    Ms. Barbara Nichols, Director of LCPS Middle School and Ms. Nereida Gonzales-Salas, Principal at Sterling Middle School provided a presentation and briefing of this wonderful opportunity for middle school students.

  • General Body Meeting - November 2012

    The focus of the 11/14 meeting will be to discuss the upcoming MSAAC Academic Achievement Advisory Fair; as well as, complete an analysis of the data (presented by Mr. Ryan Tyler in Oct) on how to reach our goal of increasing participation and performance of minorities in Honor and A/P related classess.   The data presented during the October meeting highlighted the MS breakdown of all students taking AP and Honor classes. 

    Our goal for the meeting tomorrow is to answer the below 6 questions: 
     
    1 - What schools have high achieving Honor and AP participation?
    2 - How can we borrow from their successes?
    3 - What schools have low performing Honor and AP participation?
    4 - Where in their SIP to improve these numbers
    5 - What are they doing to achieve these numbers? (If there are Reps from GB)
    6 - How can we best prepare the students for taking AP/Honor classes?

  • General Body Meeting - October 2012

     The focus of the 10/17/2012 General Body Meeting is to provide an overview (with a dialog from the members) of the VA DOE Report and the shift to Annual Measurement Objectives (AMOs) vs AYP and the impact on identified low performing LCPS schools by Director of Research, Mr. Ryan Tyler. Following Mr. Tyler's formal presentation,  discuss intervention strategies and working GAP BUSTERS resources in the Loudoun County available to work with the schools to show demonstrated progress against SIP for disproportionate sub groups.  (Formal Presentations by Mr. Ken Bolton, The 20XX Club, and Mrs. Vanessa Newby,Cooking Up Books Education Studios (C.U.B.E.S).
    In addition, initial planning committee leads for the January 2013 Academic Advisory Enrichment Fair. This Academic Advisory Enrichment Fair directly aligns to both a LCPS School Goal and the MSAAC Goal of increasing minority participation and performances in Advanced Placement (AP) and honor related classes in higher grade levels across the county.  The Fair will equip, and educate our LCPS families on the best tools and practices to successfully navigate throughout the school years, and empower and encourage parents to serve as Advocates for their children; while achieving academic success! An outcome of success will be reflected during the 2012-2013 year and beyond, expecting an increase in minority student's participation and performance in AP and Honor related classes.

    The focus of the 9/19/2012 General Body meeting is to welcome new and returning parent delegates, in addition LCPS School Adminstration Team members (Admin Staff, Principals, Teachers, and Directors)  to a new year with MSAAC. 
     
    Several other objectives include appointing a Vice Chairman, presenting the 2012-2013 goals and objectives, achieving buyin and validating the direction for the 2012-2013 goals( increasing Minority participation in AP and Honor related classes); as well as, reminding everyone of the  roles and responsibilities of a Delegate and what information to take back to their schools.
