9th Grade Transition Teams

Welcomes the Class of 2013

On behalf of our 9th grade transition team teachers and staff, I would like to welcome our incoming freshman and their families to the Freedom High School Learning Community.  The transition from middle to high school is one of the most critical time periods in an adolescent’s life.  At Freedom, we believe this experience can be made more positive and rewarding when students have a strong, supportive network of parents, teachers, administrative staff, and guidance personnel working together to serve the interests and needs of each individual student.

Overview of 9th Grade Transition Teams

The 9th grade transition teams are designed to function as a school within a school to provide our incoming freshman students a supportive and structured learning environment.  Each interdisciplinary team consists of one teacher from the English, Science, Health & Physical Education, and Social Science Departments.  A resource specialist may join a team if necessary to provide additional support to our students.  All rising freshmen will be placed on a team that consists of approximately 130 students.

Our 9th grade transition team structure creates rewarding and meaningful cross-curricular learning experiences.  The team teachers will be using a variety of research based instructional strategies to differentiate their lessons to meet the learning needs of our students.  Team teachers will have a shared planning period to discuss students’ successes, analyze student data, discuss behavioral and academic concerns, create opportunities for student growth and development, and to maintain strong lines of communication with parents regarding their child’s progress throughout the year.

Student Benefits of 9th Grade Transition Teams

Research has shown that incoming freshman benefit in the following areas from placement and participation on transition teams when entering high school:

Ø      Development of strong teacher-student relationships

Ø      Increased academic achievement

Ø      Improved behavior and attitudes

Ø      Increased attendance to school

Ø      Increased participation in extracurricular activities

We look forward to working with each of you as we continue to create a climate for success.
