December 9, 2009 - "Innovation Nation: STEM Education"
Our federal government has stated that we must advance STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education for all American students, to nurture innovation, and to ensure the long-term economic prosperity of the Nation. What is the impact of STEM initiatives on our public schools? Learn what concerns and goals are driving STEM education policies and how these policies are being rolled out in schools across our nation including our C. S. Monroe Technology Center.
January 13, 2010 - "How to Close the SOL Achievement Gap"
Learn about efforts within LCPS to close the SOL achievement gap identified by various diversity measures. One such effort that will be highlighted is the Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol (SIOP) model that has been implemented at Sugarland Elementary School. Listen to our panel of experts describe the effectiveness of SIOP program and how its unusual success at Sugarland can be sustained and leveraged to benefit other schools.
February 10, 2010 - "Film for Thought"
LEAP will screen "Making Schools Work with Hedrick Smith", a PBS documentary film, that offers a rare and often surprising look at success in unexpected places, with enormous implications for public schools nationwide.
March 10, 2010 - "Math Madness"
LEAP will present an "all things math" night that highlights this complex, and at times, emotionally-charged subject. Points covered will include the recently revamped Math Standards of Learning, attracting more students (particularly girls) to higher-level math, as well as the use of instructional aids such as manipulatives and technology. We will also discuss ways of vanquishing math phobias for both students and parents. Any parent with questions or concerns about math in our schools is encouraged to attend.
April 14, 2010 - "Moving Beyond Boundaries"
Join us as LEAP explores issues surrounding our ever-changing school attendance boundaries and selections for school sites. What have been the common issues in selecting and acquiring school sites? How can the process for developing attendance boundaries better serve all stakeholders in a timely manner? Are there ways that the negative impacts of the inevitable changes to school boundaries can be lessened for our students?
