Fabricate Fabulous Foldables For All!

Rescheduled date 2/24

3:30 - 5:00

Sterling Middle School Computer Lab

Foldables, originated by educator Dinah Zikes, are student-made, three-dimensional interactive graphic organizers that provide a visual and kinesthetic format for students of all levels to analyze, review and apply the concepts of a lesson. The use of Foldables exemplifies the three pillars of universal design for learning, and allows teachers to individualize and meet the needs of their students. Foldables can be scaffolded depending on the student. Some students may need the text provided, while others will benefit more by writing the text on their own. Some students do best with teacher selected pictures, while others may prefer creating their own illustrations. Come print, cut, fold and create. Examples across subject areas and grade levels will be addressed. Participants will leave with Foldables templates, as well as links to websites with pre-created Foldables on a variety of topics. Bring your own scissors!

February 22, 2010

3:30 - 5:30

Ken Culbert Elementary
Computer Lab

This workshop will demonstrate a remarkable resource that can be used to embed images, audio files, teaching coaches, vocabulary support, and more into an online "book". CAST Book Builder is a free tool for educators and students that can be used to create, read, publish, and share customized digital books using the UDL formula of "multiple means of representation; multiple means of action and expression; and multiple means of engagement." Using Book Builder, the author is guided through the process of developing digital books, and provided with online tips, resources and links to meet the needs of diverse readers. The reader is provided with scaffolds in the form of digital "coaches" who provide embedded prompts to facilitate and enhance the reading process. Examples ranging from picture books to non-fiction created to address the learning styles of a diverse audience will be shared.

Participants are encouraged to visit the CAST Book Builder site @ http://bookbuilder.cast.org/ A book built by the workshop facilitators title "Faucet Facts" can be viewed @ http://bookbuilder.cast.org/library.php To maximize the "hands on" experience, those desiring to "build a book" are encouraged to bring a flash drive with collected pictures, clip art, text, etc. so that they can be guided though the process of actually creating a book during the workshop.

During this hands-on workshop, we will explore how to take digital photos and digital video clips, how to make audio recordings, how to download, transfer, and save these files, and how to incorporate these files into PowerPoint slide shows. If possible, please borrow from your school a digital camera with the ability to take still photos and video clips, and a digital card reader, to use during the workshop.
